Accessible Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Accessible Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

A few weeks ago we gave you some tips to enjoy the Venice Carnival. This time, we invite you to celebrate it in Tenerife. The festivity is lived in a different way in the largest of the Canary Islands.

In this week’s post we tell you all the details about the program of this year’s event, which has chosen as its main theme “New York, the city that never sleeps”. We also advise you on accessible accommodations where to stay and provide other information on accessibility that may be of interest to you.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is full of color and rhythm. It is deservedly considered one of the best in the world. During the fifteen days, the streets of the Canarian city are filled with thousands of people wanting to celebrate this Festival of International Tourist Interest.
The stages will be dressed with the theme “New York, the city that never sleeps”. The previous year the setting was futuristic, and each year it changes by popular vote.
The Gala de las Reinas is a highly anticipated event. This year it was held on Wednesday, February 15 at the Fairgrounds. As is tradition, the candidates wear dresses that weigh more than 100 kilos and are more than three meters tall.

But what marks the official beginning of Carnival is the Announcing Cavalcade, a joyous tour of the main streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This 2023 will take place on February 17 from 8:00 p.m.
You should also take other relevant dates into account, such as the celebrations of the First Day Carnival (February 19 from 11:00), the Great Carnival Parade (February 21 from 11:00), the Parade of the Burial of the Sardine (February 22 at 10:00 p.m.) and the Second Day Carnival (February 25 from 1:00 p.m.). You can consult the conditions and the complete program on the official website of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council.

Accessibility for people with reduced mobility

All the areas where the carnival activities take place have areas reserved for spectators with reduced mobility. For example, the Tenerife Fairgrounds have a space located in the front rows, from where you can watch any show in detail. There are also accessible mobile toilets.
In the fenced streets, where the parades and processions pass through, access is also facilitated for people with physical disabilities.
