Best accessible beaches in California

Summer is almost here and our body seems to be asking us to get closer to the sea. Many people decide to go to the coast of California to take a swim in its spectacular beaches, sunbathe and forget for a moment of worries.

In this week’s post we recommend some of the best accessible beaches in this state, so you can enjoy a vacation without barriers.

Santa Monica Beach

We have already mentioned it on several occasions: Santa Monica is an excellent destination for people with reduced mobility. Its extensive and beautiful state beach is accessible to all.

As the Santa Monica Travel and Tourism page points out, there are different spots where you can rent a beach wheelchair. One is north of the pier near Arizona Avenue and others are near Ocean Park Boulevard. You can see the complete addresses in the brochure provided on the website. You can also see where the accessible playgrounds and trails are located.

Venice Beach

The Venice neighborhood in Los Angeles is mostly known for its canals. However, its beach has also become a magnet for tourists.

From April through October, Venice Beach lays out a mat so that wheelchair users can approach from a firmer surface to the shore. In addition, you can rent a free amphibious chair (available on a first-come, first-served basis).

Christmas Cove Beach

Located in the charming town of Laguna Beach, Christmas Cove Beach has a long ramp that provides access for wheelchair users. Marine life is protected here, as no shells may be collected or fished.

It tends to be less crowded than other beaches in the area and is perhaps a bit cooler due to the absence of surrounding cliffs. Nevertheless, many people go there to practice water sports.

Monterey State Beach

Monterey State Beach is very popular for surfing and parasailing. Of course, it’s also a great place to relax.

California State Parks indicates that beach wheelchairs can be requested at the Monterey Sector Lifeguard Headquarters (2211 Garden Road). You can also call ahead at (831) 649-2808.

Zuma Beach

Malibu’s beaches are, deservedly, famous all over the world. We had to mention one of them.

The clear waters and white sands of Zuma Beach have been part of the setting for the iconic Beachwatch series. As the Department of Beaches & Harbors Los Angeles County website specifies, this site has three wheelchairs and mat access (April through October).

Huntington State Beach

Huntington State Beach is located in Orange County, southern California. It is two miles long and has four paved and mostly accessible paths. In addition, there are shaded areas and parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility.

The beach wheelchair can be found at the Magnolia Kiosk, as specified by California State Parks.

Tell us, which is your favorite of those we have mentioned in the post? What other accessible beaches in California would you recommend?
