The highly anticipated US Open wheelchair tennis tournament will take place September 7-11. This 2022 doubles the size of the competitors: the men’s and women’s singles draws will have sixteen players each, while there will be eight doubles teams.
Japanese tennis player Shingo Kunieda arrives at this competition after triumphing at Wimbledom 2022 and becoming the first male wheelchair player to complete a Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Dutchwoman Diede de Groot will be fighting for a fifth consecutive US Open title.
Another important novelty will be the first junior wheelchair tournament, where sixteen players between the ages of 14 and 18 will compete. Britain’s Ben Bartram, currently ranked number two in the world, and American Maylee Phelps lead the men’s and women’s singles draws of the event. Also, Japan’s Tokito Oda, ranked first in the world in the junior category, will make his debut at the US Open playing his third consecutive Grand Slam.
The US Open Tennis is the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, one of the four most important of the circuit organized by the International Tennis Federation. Its creation dates back to 1881 and since 1978 it has been held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, New York.
Wheelchair competition was added for the first time in 2005. The United States Tennis Association celebrates the growth of athletes with disabilities in this competition.
