Spring in the Algarve, Portugal: accessible places to visit

The Algarve has become a very popular tourist destination, as it offers a perfect combination between nature and culture. In the Portuguese region you can discover beautiful beaches, nature reserves and charming towns with a valuable historical heritage.

The flower season is ideal for visiting the accessible places in the south of Portugal. You will avoid the crowds and the oppressive heat of summer, so that you can enjoy everything with more calm. In this week’s post we recommend several key sites that you cannot miss.

Ponta da Piedade

The spectacular cliffs of Ponta da Piedade appear on most postcards of the Algarve. During the spring, the golden rocks host numerous heron nests, and the surroundings are embellished with numerous flowers.
We already mentioned it in our accessible guide, but we advise you to take a boat tour to better see the place and avoid barriers. For example, the Actual Boat Trip company offers this experience for people with reduced mobility.

Ria Formosa Natural Park

Due to its environmental richness, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the country. It occupies 18,000 hectares and extends through Faro, Olhão, Loulé, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.
In this place lives the largest population of seahorses in the world, among many other species. To get to know the protected area better, a good option is to take a ride on the Formosamar boat, accessible for wheelchairs, and observe the different aquatic birds.

Praia da Rocha

Portimão’s main beach is very popular, so it tends to be too crowded in summer. You can take advantage of a hot spring day to enjoy a quiet bath.
Bordered by warm colored cliffs, Rocha beach has a large wooden walkway and suitable access for people with reduced mobility.
If you are interested in knowing other accessible beaches, you can also see the related post that we published a while ago.

Tavira

Tavira is one of the most charming cities in the region. The spring temperature is pleasant, which invites you to explore the old town.
In our accessible guide we provide you with more information, but there are many tourist attractions that you can visit, such as the Jardim do Coreto, the Mercado da Ribeira or the Castle (it has certain architectural barriers and a viewpoint only accessible through a staircase).

Benagil Caves

They say that spring is one of the best seasons to visit the Benagil Caves. You can do it by joining the Algar Experience boat activity, which lasts 3 hours and is accessible to people with reduced mobility. On the boat tour you will also get to know Praia da Marinha, considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
