Upcoming accessible events you can’t miss in Vienna

As the weather gets colder, the city of Vienna becomes more charming. Soon the pedestrian areas will be adorned with colored lights, and the squares will be filled with beautiful stalls with handcrafted objects.

So you can plan your vacation in advance, in this week’s post we tell you about the next accessible events you can enjoy in the Austrian capital.

The Viennale

Since 1960, the Vienna International Film Festival has been held at the end of October. On this occasion, it will be from October 20 to November 1. It is the largest international film event in the country, and has become a prominent reference for all film lovers.

Its program will take place in five locations: Gartenbaukino, Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus, Urania, Österreichisches Filmmuseum, and METRO Kinokulturhaus. All are wheelchair-accessible.

People with reduced mobility can buy tickets by phone or at the box office (they will be on sale from October 15). A companion can enjoy free admission.

Wien Modern

Vienna has always been at the forefront of European music. If you want to see how it continues to reinvent itself, attend Austria’s largest contemporary art music festival.

The Wien Modern was founded in 1988 by Claudio Abbado, music director of the city of Vienna at the time. This year it is celebrated from October 30 to November 30.

Please note that there are some less accessible spaces at the festival. In order to fully enjoy the festival and guarantee access, you must register at least one week in advance.

Autumn foliage in Schönbrunn Gardens

The autumn foliage of the Schönbrunn Palace gardens is an event that nature gives us. The former summer residence of the Habsburgs is one of the nation’s most important cultural assets, and well worth a visit at this time of year.

Until the end of October, there is a tourist train that runs through the palace park. According to WienTourismus, it has an elevator for visitors in wheelchairs and it has a reduced cost.

Christmas Market at Rathausplatz

The Rathausplatz – the Town Hall Square – hosts one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the world. The stalls, the adjoining park and the Town Hall building itself are all lit up spectacularly for the occasion. For their part, visitors excitedly buy handicrafts and sweets.

The square is accessible to wheelchair users, although you have to bear in mind that it will be quite busy.

New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs the world’s most famous concert. The New Year’s Concert is broadcast on television in more than 90 countries, but listening to it live is even more exciting.

Pay attention, as tickets are raffled on the Vienna Philharmonic website. If you apply to participate, you have the option to select a wheelchair seat and another seat for your companion.
